Bone Spur in Shoulder, Spine or Foot

Bone spurs are also know as osteophytes and are usually the result of stress placed upon bone. Especially around joints like the foot, spine, shoulder and neck.  It is a natural response of the human body to stress placed on the joints in an attempt to strengthen the joint.

Therefore the bone will grow in the places where excessive forces or trauma (injury) is happening. Bone spurs are in fact calcium deposits that form a pointed growth and cause severe pain and discomfort when weight is applied during activities, such as walking and running.

In many cases it is also the beginning of arthritis. Bone spurs will usually limit normal joint movement and very often cause agony. The formation of bone spurs on the spine is a very common occurrence as people ages and is an indication of degeneration in the backbone.

Osteophytes or bone spurs on the fingers or toes are usually referred to as Heberden’s nodes or Bouchard’s nodes (if on the PIP joints).
